New Members

Since the first Pentecost in the first century, women and men have been choosing to commit their lives to Christ and have joined church communities as a way to live out their faith. It is a joy for me and for our congregation to welcome Cynthia Williams Phelps and her mother, Selma Williams to the Westminster family of faith. Selma Williams transferred her membership from the Curryville Presbyterian Church. Selma says, “My faith journey was shaped in my childhood and continued through adulthood. When I married, my husband, James Williams, was an ordained Presbyterian pastor. We served the Lord in 6 different pastoral calls, mainly in the Missouri Union and Giddings-Lovejoy presbyteries. Our ministry spanned over 45 years. I was actively involved in PW and WOC work, and I was honored with a life membership pin. I am happy to be a member of Westminster and to always serve the Lord.”

Cynthia Williams Phelps transferred her membership from Faith Des Peres Presbyterian Church. Cynthia writes, “I too have been on a life-long faith journey. My spiritual foundations were shaped by the faith of my parents. I was taught at an early age that "We are all God's children". I was actively engaged in church camp and youth ministries, as well as participated in the life of various churches and denominations over the years. I was the Assistant Director of Music at Dardenne Presbyterian Church for six years and church pianist/children's choir director at First Christian Church in Columbia MO for three years. In Giddings-Lovejoy, I served as Artistic Director for the Music, Arts, and Drama camp at Mound Ridge for seven years. I became an ordained elder at Faith Des Peres Presbyterian Church, where I served on the Personnel and Worship committees. I believe that music is a powerful and integral part of worship. I have always loved singing in choirs and am happy to now be a part of Westminster's choir family. My husband and I have lived in Republic for two years and we love the community. I have three bonus daughters, son-in-law, and grandson who live in the St. Louis area. My brother, John Williams, lives and works in the Foristell area. I'm currently completing a Ph.D. in Music Education from the University of Columbia. It's a joy to now be a member of the thriving, caring fellowship of Westminster Presbyterian.”

Wow! We are really fortunate to have these two—so much wisdom, experience in church leadership and a lifetime of faith. Let’s welcome these women—and put them to work! In a time when churches are declining, we can celebrate growth in our church. Thanks be to God that they chose us! Together, may we live into God’s dreams for Westminster in the twenty first century.
